Notes on Hybridization in Leaf frogs of the Genus Agalychnis (Anura, Hylidae, Phyllomedusinae)

چکیده

Two species of Endangered Leaf-frogs, Agalychnis moreletii and Agalychnis annae, belonging to the tree frog Subfamily Phyllomedusinae, Genus Agalychnis, were hybridized for the first time whilst being maintained in captivity. Previous to this, these allopatric Central American species were considered as being distinctly separate. Crossbreeding following genetic analysis reveals that the two species are extremely closely related, and the hybrid of A. moreletii and A. annae is presented for the first time. The importance of identifying degrees of genetic variation between species and different populations of the same species, for conservation purposes, is highlighted and discussed. ____________________________________________________________________________________

A new red-eyed treefrog of Agalychnis (Anura: Hylidae: Phyllomedusinae) from middle Magdalena River valley of Colombia with comments on its phylogenetic position.

We describe a new species of the charismatic red-eyed treefrogs (genus Agalychnis) from middle Magdalena River valley of Colombia (05°50'8.04"N, 74°50'16.55"W, 380 m a.s.l.). The new species is readily distinguished from all species members of the group by having orange flanks with small white warts. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences of 16S rRNA gene recovered the new species as a member o...

Infrared reflectance in leaf-sitting neotropical frogs.

Two members of the glass-frog family Centrolenidae (Centrolenella fleischmanni, C. prosoblepon) and the hylid subfamily Phyllomedusinae (Agalychnis moreletii, Pachymedusa dacnicolor) reflect near-infrared light (700 to 900 nanometers) when examined by infrared color photography. Infrared reflectance may confer adaptive advantage to these arboreal frogs both in thermoregulation and infrared cryp...

Skin of the Red Eye Tree Frog Agalychnis Callidryas (Hylidae, Phyllomedusinae) Contains Lipid Glands of the Type Described in the Genus Phyllomedusa.

Several anuran species of the genus Phyllomedusa are known to possess specialized cutaneous glands producing lipids and exhibit a peculiar wiping behavior. This behavior is a stereotyped repertory of fore and hind limb movements distributing hydrophobic molecules onto the body surface and reducing evaporative water loss. No reports are presently available on the occurrence of lipid glands in ot...

Molecular cytogenetics of nucleolar organizer regions in Phyllomedusa and Phasmahyla species (Hylidae, Phyllomedusinae): a cytotaxonomic contribution.

Chromosome numbers, morphology, and nucleolus organizer region (NOR) locations are useful cytological characters for taxonomic and evolutionary studies. In this study, we provide the first cytogenetic analysis of Phyllomedusa bahiana and Phasmahyla spectabilis, and report new cytogenetic data on variation in NOR numbers and positions in Phyllomedusa rohdei and Phyllomedusa nordestina using conv...

First record of the genus Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae), endoparasite from Scinax staufferi (Anura: Hylidae) in Mexico

A lungworm of the genus Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) was recovered from Scinax staufferi (Anura: Hylidae) collected in Guadalupe Victoria Mapastepec, Chiapas, Mexico (15°28’28”N, 92°53’26”W, 102 m). Morphology of the nematode is briefl y described and compared with other species of the genus, and mainly with parasites of hylids in the Neotropical Realm. This study represents the fi rst rec...
